On Friday, November 2, The Johannes String Quartet made their debut on Carnegie Hall’s Quartet Plus Series in Weill Recital Hall. This concert was sold out!  The quartet also appeared in NY at the Peoples’ Symphony Concert Series the following day to equally enthusiastic audiences.

The program for the both concerts was:

Debussy String Quartet in g minor, Op. 10
Intermission
Mendelssohn String Quartet in a minor, Op. 13

The Johannes String Quartet:

Robert Chen, violin
Soovin Kim, violin
Choong-Jin (C.J.) Chang, viola
Peter Stumpf, cello

Praised for their technical command and interpretative subtleties, the Johannes Quartet is rapidly becoming an audience favorite. The Johannes brings together the concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony, Robert Chen; the first American to win the Paganini Violin Competition in 24 years, Soovin Kim; and the Associate Principal viola and cello of the Philadelphia Orchestra, C.J. Chang and Peter Stumpf respectively. The quartet members spent many summers at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, the birthplace of many of the world’s renowned quartets. Highlights of the 2001-02 season include their Carnegie Hall debut, their first “St. Paul Sunday” appearance and performances throughout the mid-Atlantic states, many supported by the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour program.
